Names and numbers. Thats the name of the game. Support. It comes in many ways and a petition is another way to get it. Many people may not be wired to go the route of a full blown advocate but a signature, that they can do.
There are many ways to collect petitions. Many groups use on-line petitions. They work and are pretty efficient. But if it's an option, a big stack of handwritten signatures plunked down on a desk has a more dramatic effect.
When you collect signatures just know there will be a few phony signatures (I have seen a few Mickey Mouses in my day) and make adjustments for that. This usually happens when someone just frops a petition off un-attended somewhere (not advised) You must allow for a bigger margin of error.
Shoot for twice the signatures you need
There are general support petitions you circulate tohave a community weigh in on an issue and then there are legal petitions for other steps.
Follow all the rules governing petitions, as I can assure you they will be intensely scrutinized, not just for legality but the flavor and persuasion of signers.
