The New Frontier
Networking on line.
Just when you thought we had peaked out with all this web site stuff we get this massive innoculation of communication with Face Book. Who could have imagined that would fly, but fly it does.
At this writing there is over 100 million users in the United States alone. And for many folks this is the be-all end-all accessory for the socially motivated. It is morphing into a culture.
But what does this have to do with community action. Well frankly, EVERYTHING. While websites are a necessary component for anchoring your information, Facebook and Twitter are revolutionizing 'getting the word out. For the young members of your group this is the only way to fly and it is minute by minute adapted into the language of every age group. This is e-mail on steroids! |

Make Social Media a part of your outreach strategy
If you really want to get the most out of social media, then you should put as much into it as you can — Encourage participation, because if everyone in your organization is connecting with people on Twitter and Facebook, you’ll be able to get your message out many times as many people than if just a couple of people did it. It's exponential possibilities are amazing.
Of course, if you go this route, I strongly suggest you consider creating a policy to make sure everyone is on the same page. This policy doesn’t have to be complicated, it simply needs to outline your group's goals and expectations and how people in the group should conduct themselves when dealing with public in the social media . In other words, don't be a bone head and bring your message down.
A Facebook Fan page would be in order!!! |
