HYDE PARK- About 20 demonstrators from the
citizens group Stop the Sprawl lined Route 9 outside town
hall with picket signs before the start of the zoning review
committee's public hearing in Hyde Park.
Signs read "Save Hyde Park," "Public Hearing
Tonight," and "Stop the Sprawl.net."
Protesters braved cold temperatures on Feb. 24 for more
than an hour, gathering on both sides of the street and
showing their messages to passing cars.
The zoning review committee, which has announced proposed
amendments to Hyde Park's 1997 comprehensive master plan,
held its first public hearing Feb. 24.
"We're here to call attention to changes in the master
plan," said Stop the Sprawl spokeswoman Anne Dexter.
"Rather than change the zoning, (the zoning review
committee) changed the master plan to match their zoning,"
she said.
The group released a statement which read: "Stop the
Sprawl is outraged at this abuse of the public process and
has planned this protest to let the town board know in loud
and clear terms that they expect zoning that is consistent
with the official 1997/2003 comprehensive plan.
"This plan limits the effects of over-development as
prescribed by County Executive William Steinhaus in his
2005 State of the County address."
