Comprehensive plan hearing goes ahead minus two members
Dems on vacation for public comment

HYDE PARK - It appears Supervisor Yancy McArthur is determined to get a public hearing for proposed changes to the master plan sooner rather than later.

He's so determined, in fact, that he stuck to a March 31 hearing date even with two board members potentially opposed to the changes on vacation that day.
The town board voted on Monday to schedule a public hearing on recommended amendments to the comprehensive master plan on March 31.
A debate then ensued when the two Democratic council members pointed out they were on vacation then, but the majority stuck to the date, by 3-2 vote.
At the hearing, residents will comment on the Supplemental Draft/Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SDGEIS), prepared by the board and Brittany Hollow Associates.
Councilwoman Victoria Kane (D- Ward 2) and Councilman Bob Linville (D-Ward 1) both pleaded with the board to reschedule the hearing since they had already planned their vacations for that week.
Kane also noted Hyde Park schools will not be in session the week of March 28, so many families will be out of town and unable to attend the hearing.
Councilman Angelo Targia (R-Ward 3), a Spanish teacher at FDR High School, said school will resume April 1, the day after the public hearing, but families could make arrangements to return earlier.
McArthur said rescheduling at any other time would be inconvenient for at least one board members. He said he set the public hearing date after trying to contact each council member.
"Just because a board member is not here, doesn't mean the meeting gets cancelled," McArthur said.
Kane, however, pointed out she wants to be involved.
"Bob (Linville) and I went out of our way to schedule our vacations at times when there were no board meetings," Kane said.
Councilwoman Barbara Potter (R-Ward 4) said she would take her vacation the first two weeks of April.
"I think we really have to move ahead with this. Either way, we're being inconsiderate to someone," said Targia.
McArthur clarified for the board that the March 31 session was a hearing, which would not include a vote.
The resolution also stipulated the period for written comment (addressed to the supervisor) would end April 15 at 4 p.m.
